In conversation with… my lovely yoga students

One of the greatest joys of teaching yoga over the years has been the people. They walk through the door each week. They quietly become part of a shared journey. These people are my lovely yoga students.

Every student arrives for a different reason. They might want to stretch a tight body or find a moment of calm. Some aim to sleep better. Others wish to breathe more easily or simply take time for themselves. Over time those reasons often change. The practice deepens unexpectedly. Sometimes, it is hard to put these changes into words.

This new series, “In Conversation With…”, provides an opportunity. You will hear directly from the people who make these classes what they are. In their own words they share what first brought them to yoga. They talk about how they felt when they started. Mention what has changed. And discuss how the practice now supports their daily lives.

My hope is that these conversations will:
  • reassure anyone who feels unsure about coming to a class
  • show that yoga is truly for every body and every stage of life
  • celebrate the quiet, steady transformations that happen over time

You may recognise your own experiences in their stories. There is the busy mind that softens. The body moves more freely. The breath becomes a steady companion. Deep rest comes at the end of practice.

I am very grateful to each student who has taken the time to share their reflections. Their words remind us that yoga is not about perfection or performance. It is about showing up, week after week, and discovering what we need in that moment.

This month I’m “In conversation with yoga student… Jude”
What first brought you to yoga?

I’m Jude, I’m 60 and I’ve been coming to Deb’s yoga classes for nearly 15 years. I first came along with friends to try something we could all do together.

How did you feel before your first class?

At the time, I saw yoga as a gentle complement to my running. Over the years, the relaxation and mindfulness in Deb’s classes have become the most important part. This is especially true during stressful times.

What helped you feel comfortable when you started?

At the start, I would arrive with a mind full of thoughts. I expected them to stay. However, I was always surprised how they settled by the end of the class.

How does yoga make you feel now — physically or mentally?

Often, I still arrive with a busy mind, but I leave feeling physically refreshed and mentally calm.

What is your favourite pose?

Child’s Pose — for that moment of complete relaxation after effort.

Have you noticed any changes in your body, sleep, or stress levels?

Being more aware of my posture now when standing and moving.

Do you use any breathing or relaxation practices at home?

Yes — the breathing and guided relaxation we practise in class have really helped my sleep. If I wake in the night, I use the ‘square’ breathing technique. I perform a body scan and usually drift back to sleep.

What do you enjoy most about Deb’s class?

I recently moved from the Vitality class to Gentle Yoga so I could attend with my husband. The slower pace has actually deepened my practice and improved my poses.

Has yoga influenced your life outside the class?

I’m more aware of how I sit and often practise kneeling in Vajrasana while watching television.

What would you say to someone who feels unsure about trying yoga?

Think about what you need. Talk to Deb. Give it a go. You might be surprised how much it helps.

My heartfelt thanks to Jude for sharing her experience.

If you would like to share your yoga journey, please get in touch.

Have you been thinking about coming to a class but aren’t quite sure where to begin? You would be very welcome. There is a place for you — just as you are. I am always happy to chat and help you find the class that feels right.
