Have you ever wondered why some yoga poses are named after warriors, sages, and even animals? Yoga is rich with stories that carry timeless lessons. When we practice the poses, we’re not just moving the body. We’re stepping into those stories and embodying their qualities. In our first term we’ll learn the story of Virabhadra.
One of the most powerful examples is Virabhadra, the fierce warrior. His story begins with the great god Shiva, who was heartbroken after the loss of his beloved. In his grief, he tore out a lock of his hair and threw it to the ground. From that lock of hair arose Virabhadra. He was a mighty warrior created to protect. His purpose was to defend and act with strength and determination.
The Warrior poses we practice in yoga – Warrior I, II, and III – are dedicated to Virabhadra. They remind us that strength is not just about physical power. It is about standing tall through life’s challenges. Finding focus in the midst of distractions. And, moving ahead with courage even when the path is uncertain.
When you step into Warrior I, you ground through the legs. You lift the chest. This embodies the courage to face the future. In Warrior II, you gaze steadily over the fingertips, symbolising clarity, presence, and the ability to focus your energy. And in Warrior III, you balance strength and grace, finding stability even as you lean into uncertainty.
These poses teach us that we, too, can call upon the spirit of the warrior. We do this not to fight battles with others, but to face the challenges of our own lives. We face them with strength of body, clarity of mind, and steadiness of heart.

✨ This September, I’m so excited to share more of these myths and legends in our new yoga series. Each week, we’ll uncover more of the story behind a pose. We will explore not only its physical benefits but also the deeper lessons it holds for life off the mat. Together we’ll practice asana, pranayama, mudra, mantra, and guided relaxation. These practices will bring ancient tales to life through movement and breath.
📅 Classes begin 8th September. Contact me here to join us on this journey and discover the wisdom woven into yoga’s most inspiring postures.
