Why Myths & Legends Matter in Yoga

I have been preparing for our new September yoga series. It’s called The Myths and Legends of the Asanas. I have been reflecting on my reading and studying. I’m reminded just how rich yoga’s tradition really is. Myths & legends matter in yoga.

It’s easy to think of yoga as simply a set of stretches or postures for the body. But in truth, many of these postures are named after legendary heroes, sages, and divine beings from India’s spiritual tradition. They each carry a story. Those stories have lessons for us that are just as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago.

For example, Hanumanasana, the “splits” pose, is named after Hanuman. He is the monkey god known for his leap of devotion and courage. The story reminds us of what becomes possible when we act with faith and wholehearted commitment. Dancer’s Pose, Natarajasana, honours Shiva as the cosmic dancer – a reminder of life’s cycles of creation, preservation, and transformation. Even humble poses like Tree Pose point us toward timeless truths: rooting down in order to rise tall.

Add real depth to your practice

Why bring these stories into class? Because they add depth to our practice. When you hold Warrior II with the story of Virabhadra in mind, you’re not just strengthening your legs. You’re also practicing focus. You cultivate courage and steadiness of character. When you explore balance in Half Moon, you’re embodying openness, expansion, and grace.

This September we’ll weave together asana, pranayama, mantra, mudra, and guided relaxation. We will explore the symbolism of each story. We will also see how each story relates to our lives today. These classes will be an invitation not only to stretch and strengthen the body. They will also encourage us to reflect on the deeper qualities we want to nurture. These qualities include courage, compassion, balance, resilience, and peace.

Bringing yoga to life!

Personally, I find this approach makes yoga come alive. The myths bring colour and meaning. They help us remember that yoga is not just about flexibility of the body. It’s also about flexibility of mind and heart. They remind us that every posture is an opportunity to embody a story. It is also an opportunity to write our own story in the process.
