In Conversation with… my lovely yoga students

One of the greatest joys of teaching yoga over the years has been the people. They walk through the door each week. They quietly become part of a shared journey. These people are my lovely yoga students.

Every student arrives for a different reason. They might want to stretch a tight body or find a moment of calm. Some aim to sleep better. Others wish to breathe more easily or simply take time for themselves. Over time those reasons often change. The practice deepens unexpectedly. Sometimes, it is hard to put these changes into words.

This new series, “In Conversation With…”, provides an opportunity. You will hear directly from the people who make these classes what they are. In their own words they share what first brought them to yoga. They talk about how they felt when they started. Mention what has changed. And discuss how the practice now supports their daily lives.

My hope is that these conversations will:
  • reassure anyone who feels unsure about coming to a class
  • show that yoga is truly for every body and every stage of life
  • celebrate the quiet, steady transformations that happen over time

You may recognise your own experiences in their stories. There is the busy mind that softens. The body moves more freely. The breath becomes a steady companion. Deep rest comes at the end of practice.

I am very grateful to each student who has taken the time to share their reflections. Their words remind us that yoga is not about perfection or performance. It is about showing up, week after week, and discovering what we need in that moment.

This time I’m “In conversation with… Tony”
  1. What first brought you to yoga? I came to yoga looking for an exercise regime suited to my age (now 80 years) and ability (rather wobbly).
  2. How did you feel before your first class? After perusing Deb’s most informative website and introductory material, I knew her classes were the place for me.
  3. What helped you feel comfortable when you started? I immediately felt at home with Deb’s calm and supportive approach.
  4. How does yoga make you feel now — physically or mentally? I find that everything I take away from class relates directly to my everyday needs, both physical and mental.
  5. What is your favourite pose? I look forward to Savasana or corpse pose when I lay flat on my back (very good for me) at the end of the class and know I’ve done my best that day.
  6. Have you noticed any changes in your body, sleep, or stress levels? I feel good about myself and better equipped to deal  with muscular issues that arise from time to time using appropriate exercises.
  7. Do you use any breathing or relaxation practices at home? I also handle my occasional insomnia using learnt breathing practices.
  8. What do you enjoy most about this class in particular? I enjoy my Monday morning class as it’s a good start to the week. I also like the way that, over time, we cover such a wide variety of exercises, making lessons always fresh and interesting.
  9. Has yoga influenced your life outside the class in any way? Yoga is a way of life that supports my other beliefs.
  10. What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying yoga but feels unsure? If you’re considering taking up yoga, try Deb’s classes. You can be sure that your personal needs will be met in a sensitive and caring way.

Thank you so much Tony for sharing these reflections with us xxx
