The start of a new year offers a natural pause—a moment to reflect, release, and begin again. I’ve chosen the Cobra Pose (Bhujangasana) – focusing on shedding the old and bringing in the new. Cobra pose is a powerful yet accessible back-bending posture that beautifully embodies the spirit of renewal. It reminds us of the snakes ability to shed it’s old scales, revealing a bright, fresh layer underneath.
In yoga philosophy, the snake is a potent symbol of transformation. By shedding the old skin, it makes space for growth, vitality, and new life. Bhujangasana invites us to do the same. It encourages us to gently release what no longer serves us. We can then inhabit our bodies, breath, and lives with fresh awareness.
The Story Behind the Asana
Bhujangasana is named after the cobra, an animal revered in yogic tradition as a guardian of life force and wisdom. When the cobra rises, it does so with alertness, strength, and grace—never forced, never collapsed. Practised mindfully, this posture teaches us how to lift the heart without strain and awaken energy without aggression.
We will explore this symbolism in class, allowing the physical shape of the posture to support an inner sense of confidence, clarity, and renewal. Each exhalation in the posture is an invitation to continue shedding the old and bringing in the new.
Benefits for Posture and the Spine
Modern life encourages us to round forward—over desks, screens, and daily tasks. Bhujangasana gently counteracts this habitual pattern by:
- Strengthening the muscles of the back
- Encouraging healthy spinal extension
- Opening the chest and shoulders
- Improving overall posture and body awareness
Practised correctly, Cobra Pose helps us rediscover an upright, supported posture—one that feels open rather than rigid.
Breathing More Fully and Freely
As the chest opens in Bhujangasana, the breath naturally deepens. This posture:
- Creates space for the lungs to expand
- Encourages fuller, more nourishing breathing
- Helps release tension held in the chest and diaphragm
We will move slowly and mindfully, linking movement with breath so that breathing becomes effortless rather than forced—supporting both physical vitality and calm.
Psychological and Emotional Benefits
Beyond its physical effects, Bhujangasana has a powerful psychological dimension. Lifting the heart while remaining grounded can:
- Boost confidence and self-trust
- Counter feelings of lethargy or low mood
- Encourage optimism and emotional resilience
- Support a sense of inner strength and renewal
The symbolism of shedding the old and bringing in the new can be deeply therapeutic. A gentle reminder to let go of past heaviness, habits, or self-doubt as we move into a new year.
The Importance of Balance: Balasana (Child’s Pose)
To create a practice that is nurturing and sustainable, we will counter Bhujangasana with Balasana (Child’s Pose). This resting posture allows the spine to soften, the nervous system to settle, and the breath to return to ease.
By moving between gentle opening and deep rest, the body learns balance—effort followed by release, awakening followed by integration.
A Practice of Renewal, Not Force
These classes are not about pushing or achieving. They are about listening, softening, and gradually inhabiting a new way of being—physically, emotionally, and mentally. Whether you are new to yoga or returning after a break, this is a supportive and meaningful place to begin your year.
